NotesIn addition to paintings there were 11 lots of drawings and prints included during the first day of this two-day sale. The catalogue refers to the owner as a "gentleman" from Buckinghamshire, but the auctioneer's (CL) copy of the catalogue indicates that there were numerous consigners, none of whom can be conclusively identified as the gentleman in question. A few were dealers, but the principal consigners were evidently private individuals, such as "W. Thompson" who sent in 35 lots, or "Gen. Fawcett" who submitted 24 lots. Among the identifiable consigners was the furniture maker John Mayhew (1736-1811) who offered 23 lots.
The sale was apparently devoted to less important items and the prices were especially modest. Over thirty of the lots had already been offered and left unsold at earlier sales; 57 lots were bought in on the present occasion. Most of those that were knocked down for more than £10 were not sold. Just one of the paintings has been identified: lot 73 on the second day, described as The Nativity and Companion by Dürer, were sold to the dealer Jackson for £5.5. The first of the two found its way into the collection of Wm. Roscoe of Liverpool, who gave it to the institution that became the Walker Art Gallery. It is now recognized as a copy after Dürer. (B. Fredericksen)
