No. of Painting Lots346
NotesThis sale of paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, maps and miscellanea was unusual in many respects. Auctions in Delft were relatively rare, and this one included an exceptionally large number of paintings. The catalogue was printed in Dutch, but a French translation is given for each lot. In addition to the catalogue number there is also a second number described as "No. ink." -- for "inkoppen" ? -- whose significance is not clear. These numbers are generally much higher than the lot numbers, between 1000 and 2000, but their origin is not known, and we have not included them. For some reason, three of the four extant copies of the catalogue are in Belgian libraries; although only one of them is annotated with just a few buyers' names, it appears that a number of Belgian dealers attended the sale. The individual paintings were mostly landscapes and genre scenes of small dimensions, and the prices, so far as they are known, were generally low. Among the few exceptions was lot 213a, a scene with A Drunken Schoolmaster by Jan Steen, which is supposed to have fetched fl. 600. A landscape by Dirk van Bergen was knocked down for fl. 400, but its buyer was apparently the auctioneer himself, so it may have been bought in. (B. Fredericksen)
