Lugt Number6808
No. of Painting Lots56
NotesThe contents were 56 lots of paintings which supposedly had come from the Villa Novellara at Modena. Most of the paintings had appeared at an earlier sale of the same collection at Christie's on Mar.3 (no.244). As noted there, it is probable that the owner of this collection was now the dealer Biagio Manfredi, and some of the pictures that apparently failed to sell in the present sale -- although they were supposedly being offered without reserves -- reappear in Manfredi's sale of Apr.22/23, 1806. However, a note in the ISGB copy of the catalogue states: "Those marked thus + were not in the last sale but belong to Messrs Lunn, Chicatini, & others," indicating that Manfredi was not the only consigner. The following lots are so marked: 7-9, 15-16, 19-20, 23, 34, 41, 43-45, and 50. These correspond almost exactly to the lots that did not appear in the March 3 sale. Therefore the "Novellera" provenance has not been given for these lots in this Index, nor have we assigned them to another owner since one cannot tell which lots belonged to either "Lunn" or "Chicatini" (i.e., Cianchettini). The prices were reasonably good, but it is doubtful that very many represent genuine transactions. In addition to those paintings that reappear in Manfredi's sale in 1806, four or five pictures were also inserted into the Buckinghamshire sale of May 13/14, 1805 (no.333). (B. Fredericksen)
