NotesThe proprietor, until his death the deputy teller of the Exchequer and prior to that the Commissioner for Bankrupts, had died just the year before. This sale of his household furniture and personal effects was held in his residence in Manchester Street. Besides furniture, books, wine and miscellaneous material, there were also small groups of drawings, pictures and bronzes which were offered on the last day. The paintings were by Italian, Dutch and British artists, but the descriptions are too brief to permit their identification. One lot, a picture of Fishermen putting to Sea by Gainsborough, is given prominence over the others, and the auctioneer's copy indicates that this lot belonged to a certain "Jt," perhaps the dealer Jaubert. (It is probably the painting of this subject now in the Washington National Gallery.) It did not fetch the highest price, however. Three lots by Cuyp, Isaak van Ostade and Dusart, were all purchased by an anonymous "JA" for more, implying that they were of much better quality than was indicated by the nature of the sale and its catalogue. (B. Fredericksen)
