No. of Painting Lots170
NotesThe principal part of this sale was devoted to paintings, but there were also significant numbers of prints as well as scientific and musical instruments. The only collector mentioned in the catalogue is G.H. Trochel, a doctor of medicine whose name is given on the title page immediately following the description of the scientific and musical instruments, implying that his possessions were to be found in this part of the catalogue rather than among the paintings or drawings. This is confirmed by the three copies of the catalogue annotated by organizers of the sale, who marked the lots with the initials of the sellers; the letter "T" is exclusively associated with lots consisting of scientific instruments, so Trochel apparently submitted no paintings. There were six different consignments of pictures, designated E, P, PP, R, S, and V. The RKDH copy of the catalogue, which belonged to the dealer C.S. Roos, contains a list that identifies a few of the owners and shows how the profits were distributed. By far the largest amount was owing to "E," the proprietor of 51 lots, among which were many of the best paintings in the sale. He is identified there as "Elias." This is certainly a member of the prominent Amsterdam family of that name, most probably the former mayor -- prior to the French occupation -- Jacob Arnoudsz. Elias (1728-1800), who had died only a few months before the present sale. Since it is still unknown whether Elias owned a collection of paintings, his identity cannot be confirmed without further research in the Amsterdam archives. In any case, a few of the "Elias" paintings brought high prices: most notably Metsu's The Usurer, bought by the artist-dealer Cornelis Buijs for fl. 850. (It is now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.) A depiction of a marine storm by Backhuysen sold for fl. 751. Altogether Elias's pictures realized fl. 4711:18.
Only one other consigner is identified in the RKDH copy of the catalogue: "PP" was "Pruisse M," which presumably signifies R.M. Pruyssenaar acting on behalf of "M." "M" is still unidentified, but it is worth noting that one of his lots, no.48 by "De Delfsche van der Meer," was bought by his colleague Philippus van der Schley, also acting for "M." The latter can be identified as "Merrem," but there is no reason to assume that the two "M's" are the same person. The pictures in this consignment were sold for much lower amounts, fetching a total of just fl. 852:10. A landscape by Jacob van Ruisdael brought fl. 160, and the picture of A Woman Weighing Gold by Jan Vermeer of Delft reached only fl. 60. (This is the painting of that subject by Pieter de Hooch now in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin rather than the one by Vermeer in Washington.)
Of the remaining consigners, "P" can certainly be identified as Pruyssenaar, "R" was no doubt C.R. Roos, and "S" was Ph. van der Schley. Only "V," who consigned eight paintings, cannot be named, although he was most probably the dealer Jacobus Vinkeles.
Altogether the sale realized fl. 12,298:16. (B. Fredericksen)
