Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | Goodwin, Capt. from catalog: A gentleman from auctioneer's copy: Cockel; Godwin; etc. | Lugt Number | 6243 | No. of Painting Lots | 125 | Notes | The sale was dedicated to minor paintings whose owner is described by the catalogue only as "a gentleman." However, the auctioneer's (CL) copy of the catalogue indicates that a number of different consigners were involved, though for the most part they were apparently private individuals rather than dealers. The largest group came from a certain "Cockel," who may have been the "gentleman" referred to on the title page, but about whom nothing is known. Prices were generally below £5, and the highest was £18.18 paid for a painting of Polyphemus and Galatea by Albani belonging to the banker/dealer William Morland which seems, however, merely to have been bought in. Fredericksen) | Catalog Location(s) | CL [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Auctioneer's copy, annot. in pencil with all sellers, many buyers and all prices. The buyers' names are written in a careless and incomplete manner which makes them difficult to read. | Photocopies | BIB, FLNY, NGL, CIL and RKDH (all of CL) | See Also | Sale Contents | | Art Sales Catalogues Online | | Digitized Catalog - Frick | | |
