NotesThe catalogue for this extended sale was issued in two parts, the first devoted to paintings, drawings, and prints, and the second to coins, musical and scientific instruments, naturalia, books and miscellanea. The title page, which indicates that the paintings were considered the most significant segment, mentions just two collectors: W.F. Taelman Kip, deceased, and an unidentified "Kunst-Liefhebber," neither of whom is necessarily connected with the paintings in the sale. Three extant copies of the catalogue that belonged to dealers who organized the sale are annotated with letters next to the individual lots, designating the consignments to which they belonged. Of the sixteen consignments, only six included paintings: E, K, P, R, S and Z. The largest number of paintings, 112 lots, belonged to "K," who was certainly W.F. Taelman Kip. Most of the remainder belonged to "P," who was almost certainly the dealer R.M. Pruyssenaar, since he is also given as the person buying in some of the same lots. The consigner "S" can be confidently identified as Ph. van der Schley, one of the co-organizers of the sale. This is confirmed by the LBDa copy of the catalogue, which probably belonged to Van der Schley and which has a brief list identifying some of the consigners, including F, G, H, M and S. Only the latter submitted paintings, and he is identified there as "Schley divers," meaning that he was representing a variety of other collectors, as was perhaps Pruyssenaar. Finally, we may assume that "R," who owned just seven lots, was the dealer C.S. Roos, leaving just "E" (one lot) and "Z" (four lots) unidentified.
Willem Frederick Taelman (or sometimes Taalman) Kip (1761-1800) was a wealthy collector who lived on the Herengracht during the last eight years of his life. Very little is known about how and where he acquired his paintings, but the collection seems to have been assembled during the decade preceding the sale. All of his 112 lots were sold, and the annotated catalogues record that his lots brought a total of fl. 974:4 altogether. The highest price was realized by a landscape painted by Jan Miel, which fetched fl. 54. Only one of Kip's lots has been identified: lot 14 by Adriaen van Gaesbeeck, A Young Man in His Study, which the Royal Museum (now the Rijksmuseum) acquired in 1808. At the present sale it brought fl. 47 from the dealer Roos.
The paintings consigned by P[ruyssenaar] did slightly better, although eight of his 97 lots were bought in. By far the largest amount was brought by the first two lots in the sale, described as portraits of a man and his wife by Metsu, for which the dealer Coclers paid fl. 219. (They cannot now be traced.) The next highest amount was fl. 68:10 paid for a satirical representation of The Trial of Johan van Oldenbarneveld by Cornelis Saftleven. (This painting is now also in the Rijksmuseum.) Pruyssenaar's paintings fetched a total of fl. 1568:15.
In spite of its size, the sale consisted primarily of inexpensive landscapes and genre pieces and does not seem to have included major works. The entire sale, including all categories, came to fl. 10,818:10. (B. Fredericksen)
