Lugt Number5565
No. of Painting Lots110
NotesLugt mistakenly lists this sale as 1797.

"A catalogue of a valuable and beautiful collection of painted and stained glass, consisting of a variety of historical, fancy and other subjects, best suited for brilliancy of transparent effect, moon-lights, fire pieces, interior of churches, &c. &c. &c. Inimtiably executed and finished by the ingenious artist, Mr. Hills. Which will be sold by auction by Mr. Christie, at his Great Room, Pall Mall, on Saturday, March the 31st, 1798, at twelve o'clock."

Robert Hills is mainly known as a watercolor painter, but he started as a stained glass artist ca.1788-1791. From the 1790s on he focused on watercolor, and he was apparently selling off his stock of stained glass in this 1798 sale. The title suggests that they are all his work, though a few of the lot titles are not clear about whether the work is by or copied after another artist.
