from other sources: [Monsieur de Calonne]
Lugt Number5226
NotesFourth in a series of sales that began with April 28, 1794, and included pictures belonging to Calonne and Desenfans. Waterhouse had already made the identification and he identified some of the pictures at Dulwich. Several more pictures have been identified by Paul Matthews (who was writing a catalogue of the Dulwich collection) as those from Desenfans' collection. Furthermore, an article in the London Times on May 20, 1794, p.3 states that "Monsieur de Calonne's collection will continue the whole of this week" at Cox's Museum, so his must be the pictures advertised as the "Property of an emigrant nobleman" on the title page. The JPGM original has one change on the "Conditions of Sale" page, number 9, which states the account would be settled on the 20th of June, rather than the printed date of the 3rd of May.

The first catalogue is from April 28, 1794. Lots 1-435 were also printed in three later catalogues with the same titles: the second on May 12, 1794+; the third, on May 26, 1794+; and the fourth was the present one. Most of the lots are the same as the May 12 sale, but there are several lots added to the end and the following lots have been replaced: 42, 72, 74, 79, 80, 90, 100, 108, 110, 122, 133, 166, 184, 187, 205, 207, 215, 224, 402; several of these lots maintained the same dimensions as the lots in the earlier sale and are, therefore, probably wrong.

"A catalogue of several first-rate pictures, the property of an emigrant nobleman, and of the remaining part of the truly-superb cabinet of a well-known collector; which will be sold on Monday, May 12, 1794, and following days, (Sundays excepted) by private contract, by a committee appointed for that purpose, at the Great Rooms, (late Cox's Museum) Sprint Gardens; where the nobility and gentry, provided with tickets, may view the said pictures."
