NotesThe seller was the painter Sir James Thornhill, 1675-1734. Published in Burlington Magazine, Vol. 82, p.132-136.
"A catalogue of the Intire collection belonging to Sir James Thornhill, late principal history painter to His Majesty, &c. Consisting of several very capital pictures, as likewise, his last elaborate works, from the cartoons of Raphael, at Hampton-Court, which he finished with his utmost care and judgment, to preserve to future ages a just idea of those divine originals."
The OL copy was in the private collection of Adolph Paul Oppé, CB, FBA (22 September 1878 - 29 March 1957), whose library was acquired by the Paul Mellon Centre. The OL copy was published in Burlington Magazine, which was scanned by FLNY. The publication includes commentary.
