The Chevalier Lambert was actually Sir John Lambert, an Englishman of Huguenot extraction, born 1728, died 1799. He lived most of his life in Paris where he was head of the international banking firm of that name, and he became a naturalized citizen while living there. He survived the Terror and returned to England not too long before his death.
No paintings or other works of art have been connected with Porail, but a large number can be traced to Lambert. However, it is also fairly certain that many of the paintings in the sale were the property of Lebrun, the presiding expert. For many lots it is unclear who owned what, and for those lots we have not assigned a consigner's name. | Catalog Location(s) | BV Annot. with most buyers and all prices.
