Sale Location | rue S. Severin, Paris, France | Seller(s) | Orléans, Philippe II, duc d' from catalog: feu S.A.R. Monseigneur le Duc d'Orléans | Expert | Anonyme | Lugt Number | 359a | No. of Painting Lots | 85 | Notes | Philippe II, duc d'Orleans, born 1674, died 1723. The circumstances surrounding this sale are still unclear. It consisted entirely of Dutch, Flemish and a few German paintings, and while it did include some good pictures, the paintings of Rubens and Van Dyck, without any doubt the most important northern pictures in the collection, were not included, which may suggest that the pictures in this sale were seen as expendable. No annotated copies of the catalogue are known, but 15 or 17 of the paintings do not appear in the 1793 sale of northern pictures from the Orleans collection so they may have been sold in 1727, or http://portal.getty.edu/books/bnf bpt6k58057301more important paintings in the sale were apparently not sold. | Catalog Location(s) | RKDH Not annot.
