NotesPierre Crozat's painting collection was inherited by his nephew Louis-François Crozat, marquis du Château, who died in January, 1750. The dawings and the sculpture had been sold, and the remainder passed to the younger brother, Joseph-AntoineCrozat, marquis de Tugny (1699-1750, who also added many paintings in his own right. A sale was held in 1751 (F-A52). Many of the best pieces had been purchased at the 1751 sale by the third brother Louis-Antoine, baron de Thiers, (1700-1770). The collection was offered to Catherine the Great of Russia, who purchased the best paintings. The contract for the sale was signed on January 4, 1772. The present sale contained what was left after that.
